This episode shows how a religious mindset can drift away from its main purpose. The Pharisees focus on the disciples’ outward conduct and immediately judge them, without seeing what is truly important. The word “unclean” here does not refer to moral sin, but to the ritual purity that had been shaped through human traditions. Their accusation shows that they were placing external rules above the living presence of God, which was right before them. This reveals a dangerous condition: a person can become so focused on form that he loses the substance. When outward order becomes primary, the heart begins to judge rather than to recognize. Thus, the contrast is seen here between the demand for external purity and inner truth, which Christ will soon uncover through His teaching.
