Christ’s list continues and includes not only obviously grave sins, but also such inward and socially accepted sins that people often try to ignore. Theft begins not with the hand, but with the heart’s insatiable desire. Greed is the heart’s lack of contentment. Deceit shows the corruption of truth from within. The evil eye means envy, a malicious gaze, and an inability to endure another person’s good. Blasphemy, pride, and foolishness also appear different outwardly, but all of them flow from a corrupted heart. This list aims not only to give moral information, but to shake a person’s conscience. Many could say that they were not defiled by food or by an unwashed hand, but who could say that there are no such things in his heart? Here Christ removes self-righteousness and shows that a person becomes guilty before God not only through obvious evil deeds, but also through his inner motives.
