This rebuke of the Lord is severe, yet full of instructive love, and it also expresses amazement that the disciples, though being with Him, still have not grasped this truth. He expected that they would already be mature in understanding these basic truths. Nevertheless, He does not leave them in darkness, but explains again. Jesus says that a person is not defiled by what enters into him from the outside, which cuts off thinking that is focused on externals and prepares them to understand a deeper truth.
