In this way you dishonor the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you also do many similar things.”
Christ concludes the example and exposes the whole problem. They were despising the word of God and making it invalid. That is, what God had established, they were in practice canceling through their interpretations and traditions. This was not merely mistaken teaching, but a real attack directed against holiness. When a person places his word above God’s word or alongside it in such a way that the latter loses its power, he is in a very dangerous position. The Lord also says that this is not only one example: “You also do many similar things.” That is, the problem was systemic. Their whole way of thinking had already shifted toward the supremacy of human commandments. This verse calls us to examine our traditions and habits in the light of God’s word. If anything, even in the most respected form, stands against Holy Scripture, it must be rejected.
