This verse bears witness to Christ’s divine omniscience. He hears not only spoken words, but also the hidden counsels of the heart. This clearly shows that a person’s inner world is open before Him. Here Jesus not only exposes the thoughts of the scribes, but also sets them before their own conscience. He asks not because He does not know the answer, but so that they may recognize their inner blindness and the hardness of their heart. This episode reminds us that nothing is hidden before God: a person may conceal his thoughts from people, but the Lord sees the deepest motives of the heart. And that all-seeing gaze has as its purpose not only to judge, but also to lead to repentance.
