This final statement reveals Christ’s sovereignty over the Law. If He is the Lord of the Sabbath, then He has the full right to reveal its true meaning and to speak about it with authority. This is far more than a mere interpretation by an ordinary teacher: here speaks the One who stands in the same divine authority as the Author of the Law. The title “Son of Man” once again unites His humble incarnation and His heavenly glory. Thus this chapter ends with a great revelation: Jesus, who forgives sins, calls sinners, teaches about new life, and interprets the Sabbath day in its true meaning, is in fact the Lord. And before Him a person is called not only to marvel, but also to bow in humility with faith.
