The paralytic got up and immediately, taking up his mat, went out before everyone, so that all were amazed, gave glory to God, and said, “We have never seen anything like this.”

The man who a little earlier was unable to move now carries his own mat. This reversal testifies to the full and immediate effect of Christ’s power. The people are amazed and glorify God, which is the right response to divine works. Yet even here the Gospel gives us reason to reflect: did this amazement lead them to true faith, or did it remain only outward admiration?
