Mark 12:44

For they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had, her whole livelihood.”

This final statement reveals the greatness of the widow’s offering. The rich gave from their surplus, that is, their life was not essentially changed by it. But the widow gave out of her poverty, and by this she showed complete trust toward God. She gave “her whole livelihood,” which became a living testimony of faith. This does not teach recklessness, but shows the beauty of a heart’s full devotion. For God, what matters is not only what we give, but what we keep in our heart. The widow gave little, but in reality she gave herself: her security, her hope, and her reliance on the Lord. Thus Mark chapter 12 ends with a deep contrast: the religious leaders displayed outward greatness, but the insignificant widow revealed the greatness of true faith before God’s eyes.
