Jesus, standing opposite the treasury box, was watching how the crowd was putting money into the treasury box. Many rich people put in large sums.
Christ stands opposite the treasury and watches people’s giving. This shows that the Lord not only sees our outward deeds, but also examines their measure, their motive, and the condition of the heart. The rich were putting in much, and by outward measure their gifts were large. Yet in God’s eyes the value of a gift is not measured only by the amount of money, but by the heart with which it is given and how much self-sacrifice is in it. This scene reminds us that no service and no gift is invisible to Christ’s eyes.
