For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.
Christ explains that the life of the resurrection is not governed by the marital and generational orders of the present world. He does not say that those who rise become angels, but that in a certain sense they will be like angels—meaning in immortality, holiness, and freedom from earthly needs. Marriage in this life is God’s holy institution, but it is connected with the course of mortal life and the continuation of offspring. In the resurrection there is no death, and therefore the need for that order passes away. This reveals the greatness of eternal life: there God’s people live directly in His presence, filled with a joy that surpasses all earthly bonds.
