Jesus answered and said to them, “Is it not for this reason that you are mistaken, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
Christ reveals to them two roots of their error: ignorance of Holy Scripture and failure to recognize the power of God. They likely knew the letter of Scripture, but did not understand its spiritual meaning and its full testimony. They also did not believe that God is able to raise the dead and make them participants in a new state. This word is an important warning for all times: error often arises where people either misunderstand Scripture, or measure God’s power by the limits of their own mind. True faith is grounded both in the right knowledge of Holy Scripture and in trust in God’s almighty power.
