The Sadducees rejected the resurrection of bodies, and by asking Christ a difficult question, they tried to ridicule the teaching about the resurrection. They come not in order to learn, but in order to defend their unbelief. This shows that a person sometimes uses questions of Holy Scripture not to draw near to the truth, but to flee from the truth. The resurrection seemed impossible to them because they limited God’s power by the measures of the present world. Christ answers them by exposing both their mistaken understanding of Holy Scripture and their ignorance concerning the power of God.
