Truly I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Rise up and be thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him, whatever he says.
The image of throwing the mountain into the sea symbolizes overcoming obstacles that are impossible from a human point of view by God’s power. The Lord does not teach arbitrary miracle-working or the fulfillment of self-willed desires, but speaks about a faith that fully trusts God and acts according to His will. “Not doubting in the heart” means not being divided between God’s word and one’s own fears. Yet this saying must not be understood as a means of subjecting God to a human will. True faith is never separated from obedience. What the believer asks according to God’s will, His glory, and His promises can overcome such obstacles that, to human eyes, seem immovable like mountains.
