In the evening Christ goes out of the city, probably toward Bethany. This shows the ordered course of His days and that He does not yet give Himself into the hands of His enemies until His hour comes. Although the leaders were already seeking to bring Him to destruction, they could do no more than God’s providence would allow. The Lord calmly leaves the city, fully in control of events. This brief statement reminds us that in Christ’s life every moment was under the Father’s will.
