People had turned the temple area into a passageway and a convenience for trade. Christ forbids even carrying vessels through it, because the house of God was not to be used as an ordinary road or a practical shortcut. This shows that indifference toward holiness begins with small acts of disrespect. When a person begins to treat the house of God or the works of God like an object for ordinary use, he gradually loses reverence. The Lord restores proper respect for the holy place and reminds us that what is dedicated to God must be treated with holiness, order, and reverent fear.
