The next day, when they went out from Bethany, He was hungry.
This brief statement bears witness to the true humanity of Christ. He who fed the crowds and is Himself the Bread of life, in His humble incarnation felt hunger. This shows that He truly shared the natural weaknesses of human life, without sin. Yet this hunger also becomes a preparation for the prophetic action that follows. The Lord approaches the fig tree, seeking fruit, and that image is to reveal Israel’s spiritual condition. Just as Christ bodily sought fruit on the tree, so God seeks spiritual fruit from His people: faith, righteousness, repentance, and true worship.
