“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest.”
The people mention David’s kingdom because the Messiah was expected to come from David’s line and to be the heir of his throne according to the promise (2 Samuel 7:12–13). They rightly recognized the messianic connection with David, but they still did not fully understand the spiritual nature of the kingdom. Christ was bringing not only Israel’s political restoration, but the establishment of God’s kingdom in hearts and the salvation of the world from sin. The phrase “Hosanna in the highest” has the breath of heavenly praise: the plea for salvation and the glorifying rise up to God. This verse shows that in Christ the promise to David is fulfilled in a higher and eternal way than the people could imagine at that moment.
