In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
This verse points to the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He comes from Nazareth, a place considered humble and insignificant, and stands in the same water where sinful people were coming to confess their sins. Yet Jesus is baptized not because of his own sins, since he is spotless, but in order to identify with the people and to fulfill all righteousness. In this way he humbled himself so that he might raise up fallen humanity. This episode teaches that our Savior is not far from the human condition, but in his mercy he has drawn near to us and has willed to share the human condition in order to lead them to salvation.
