And John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
This verse describes John’s strict and separated-from-the-world way of life. His clothing and food recall the prophets of the Old Covenant, especially Elijah, and show that he did not live for worldly glory or comfort. His whole appearance suggested that he was completely devoted to his mission. In this way, John’s life matched his preaching: he called people to renounce the “ornament” of sin and return to the simplicity of heart.
