And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him.”
This verse reveals Christ’s absolute authority over the powers of darkness. He does not enter into a long dispute with the demon, but with a single command silences it and drives it out. This shows that the Son of God has no need of any external help or ritual device; his word itself is power. He also does not allow testimony about himself to come from an unclean source, because the truth must be proclaimed with holiness. Thus, Christ’s command not only brings deliverance to that man, but also shows that the kingdom of God has come with power, to destroy the works of Satan.
