In their synagogue there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit, and he cried out
This verse shows the effect of Christ’s presence not only on people, but also on the powers of darkness. Where the true Light appears, darkness begins to cry out. The man with an unclean spirit becomes that tragic picture of how much a person can suffer under the dominion of evil. Yet in that very condition Christ appears as the Liberator. This verse reminds us that the reality of evil is heavy, but it has no final authority where the Son of God comes.
